    New York gathering places
Yes. New York tends to rest on its laurels. Central Park was (and still could be) a wonderful park. Is it not the largest park of any other city? I grew up in NY and once crime became a real problem in the park I stopped going. I lived in Madrid for a year and never felt threatened in Retiro Park.
Parks should never fall into disrepair. Unfortunately, they are not given the respect they deserve in a city government’s list of priorities. Their importance is undetected. When I was young we had little city parks to go to for picnics, playgrounds and swimming in the kiddie pool. All of those parks fell into disrepair or became crime beds. It is a crime to allow a park to go to seed. European cities seem to have more respect for their parks. We should too.
